The Muskrat Jamboreee is good old family fun. The weekend began with silly relay races, Red River jigging contests and a very competitive game of musical chairs. My favourite entertainers were the drum dancers wearing carefully crafted traditional Inuvialuit clothing. I was struck by how inclusive and accepting the community is. Elders, children, and people with physical and mental challenges were all welcomed into the festivities. During the talent show, it seemed the cheers were loudest for those who appeared nervous or who may have sung a little off key.
There were lots of outdoor activities, too, dogsledding, snowmobile races and more fun and games. And, of course, the food! I had more Eskimo donuts (bannock) than I care to admit. I also enjoyed my first taste of moose stew. I can't say the same about muktuk - beluga whale blubber. That is an acquired taste I may be beyond acquiring!
